The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council Urges CFTC to Ban Online Betting Platforms
The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council (SWC) has taken a firm stance against online betting platforms by sending a letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) urging them to prohibit the offering of sports event contracts in the Volunteer State. This move comes after several other states like Illinois, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, and Ohio issued cease-and-desist letters to trading platforms such as Kalshi and Robinhood, while Michigan launched investigations into similar markets last week.
SWC’s Concerns
The SWC, led by Executive Director Mary Beth Thomas, emphasized the need for strict adherence to state laws and regulations regarding online betting. In the two-page letter addressed to CFTC Acting Chair Caroline Pham, the SWC highlighted 13 alleged violations of state laws and regulations from prediction markets.
The Tennessee Sports Gambling Act defines a “Wager” as a sum of money risked by a bettor on the unknown outcome of sporting events, encompassing various forms of betting authorized by the council. The SWC emphasized that any entity accepting bets without a valid license from the SWC is in violation of the Act.
Protecting Tennessee Residents
The SWC underscored the importance of protecting individuals who choose to wager in the state by enacting specific requirements for sports betting licensees. These measures include prohibiting individuals under the age of 21 from wagering, maintaining lists of ineligible persons or categories, implementing responsible gambling requirements like self-exclusion, and restricting the use of credit cards and cryptocurrency for funding accounts.
Furthermore, the SWC’s regulations do not allow kiosks for establishing or accessing accounts, contain specific anti-money laundering controls, and prohibit wagering on injuries, penalties, or actions of college athletes, and in-game prop bets on college teams.

The SWC pointed out that online platforms offering sports event contracts are not compliant with the protections mandated by the Tennessee Legislature.
