LNW Gaming to Close Michigan Facility, Leading to Layoffs
LNW Gaming, a subsidiary of Light & Wonder, has made the decision to shut down its facility located in Michigan. This closure is expected to result in the layoff of approximately 100 employees, according to a recent filing by the company.
Layoffs on the Horizon
According to a WARN notice submitted to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in February, the facility at 22630 Haggerty Road in Farmington Hills, Michigan will permanently close next month. LNW Gaming has confirmed that this closure will necessitate layoffs.
LNW Gaming plans to lay off around 92 employees due to the shutdown of the Michigan facility. The layoffs are scheduled to commence on April 27 and will impact a range of positions from entry-level operators and game show presenters to managers, supervisors, and trainers.
The company stated that the affected workers are not part of a union and do not have any bumping rights.
Legal Setback for LNW Gaming
LNW Gaming recently faced legal challenges in Nevada where a judge ruled against the company in a case brought by Talisman Group.
The lawsuit was initiated by Talisman Group, represented by the boutique law firm Bailey Kennedy based in Las Vegas. Talisman alleged that LNW had breached an existing distribution agreement for the popular baccarat product EZ Baccarat.
While LNW Gaming had leased EZ Baccarat to offer it to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, they also promoted a competing no-commission baccarat game called Ruyi Baccarat. The judge sided with Talisman, agreeing that LNW Gaming had indeed violated the contract.
The legal battle is ongoing and will continue in Vancouver.
Light & Wonder’s Exit from Live Casino Market
Light & Wonder, the parent company of LNW Gaming, recently announced its decision to exit the live-dealer iGaming market. This significant move was disclosed during the company’s latest earnings call, leaving Evolution and Playtech as the only remaining live casino suppliers in the US.
The management of Light & Wonder stated that they will now focus on other products that they believe offer better visibility for superior returns compared to live casino gaming. CEO Matt Wilson highlighted that the live casino vertical turned out to be a smaller portion of the business than initially anticipated.
