IFA Proposes Complete Ban on Football Betting for Irish League Players and Officials
The Irish Football Association (IFA) is planning to implement a new rule that prohibits all professional players and club officials from betting on football matches worldwide. Currently, players and officials in the Irish League are only restricted from betting on domestic games, allowing them to place wagers on matches outside of Northern Ireland using sports betting apps.
IFA follows English and Scottish FA’s Lead
The IFA, the governing body for association football in Northern Ireland, aims to align with the English and Scottish Football Associations in imposing a total ban on football betting globally. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) already enforces a complete ban, while the Football Association of Wales (FAW) restricts betting only on matches within Wales.
At the upcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled for June 16 in Limavady, Co. Derry, the IFA will propose a blanket ban on football betting for professional players and club officials to mitigate the risks of match manipulation.
Concerns Over Increased Risks of Match Manipulation
One of the main arguments supporting the ban is the belief that Irish League players from the Republic of Ireland could exploit their knowledge to place bets on matches within their region, potentially leading to match-fixing scandals. However, not all members within the IFA are in favor of the proposal, with some questioning the necessity of adopting the ban.
One official expressed skepticism, stating, “Just because other Associations have adopted it doesn’t mean the IFA need to. It’s a step too far.”
IFA’s Efforts to Cleanse the Game of Betting Scandals
Over the years, the Irish football scene has been marred by various betting scandals, prompting the IFA to take action. In October 2019, Glentoran midfielder John Herron received a two-game ban for betting on three matches within Northern Ireland.
Similarly, in March of the same year, Institute’s Ronan Doherty faced an eight-week suspension for betting on his team to lose against Ballymena. Doherty was required to donate his €140 winnings to charity.
In another incident in April 2013, three Limavady United players received lengthy bans for betting on their own Championship matches. Paddy Power, one of the leading online casinos in the UK, flagged irregular betting activity on a game where Limavady suffered a 2-0 defeat to Dergview.
By proposing a complete ban on football betting for Irish League players and officials, the IFA aims to uphold the integrity of the sport and prevent future scandals from tarnishing the reputation of Irish football.
